Program Information
The Heritage Day is the annual rite of spring showcasing the 1820s furnished Bryant House and 1760s Joel McLendon Cabin, the oldest dwelling on its original site in Moore County. On this special day, both houses will be open and there will be 18th and 19th century crafters,  live music and food. There will also be “camps” of both the American Revolution and the Civil War with re-enactors, demonstrations of old-time activities such as quilting, weaving, cooking, woodworking, and living history.

When you were a child, did you ever read stories about pirates and treasures? You
probably have not thought about those stories for many years. But the Moore County
Historical Association is going to rekindle your interest in those stories. As part of its
lecture series, the Association is sponsoring a talk by Linda Carnes-McNaughton, Ph.D.
This is the story of Edward Teach, more commonly known as the notorious Blackbeard,
the Pirate.
In her lecture, Dr. Carnes-McNaughton will offer an illustrated journey of the ship’s history,
its use as a French privateer, then as a slave ship, and then its capture and use as a pirate
flagship. The lecture will highlight 18th-century artifacts found on the famous North
Carolina shipwreck. She will bring copies of her book which may be purchased at a
discount price of $20 for attendees and will happily sign them.

The annual meeting will be held at the historic 1860s Keith home in Cameron. Our host is David Keith, whose ancestral home will be open for viewing. David will also share the history of his family’s immigration from Scotland. There will be a short business meeting with reports by the Co-Presidents and election of new directors. Please bring a lawn chair. Refreshments will be served.
Located at 189 Baker Road, Cameron NC 28326. From Southern Pines, Take US-1 North 10 miles. Turn right on Cranes Creek Road. Go 1 1/2 miles turn right onto Atkins Road. Go 400 feet turn left onto Cyprus Church Road. Go 0.5 miles turn right onto Baker Road.
Kenneth Black Cemetery Dedication

Program Information
Kenneth Black represents the American Revolution in Moore County and was involved in an unfortunate Revolutionary War incident. Kenneth was a loyalist who was killed by patriots in 1781. One of the special preservation projects of the Moore County Historical Association is to preserve where Scotsman Black was buried. Kenneth was a farmer and his home and land was located between Pinehurst and Southern Pines. He settled here in the mid 1700s, and remained loyal to the Royal Colony until he was brutally slaughtered by patriot troops of Colonel Phillip Alston.

The Piedmont and western North Carolina were settled before the American Revolution largely by Scots-Irish descendants from Pennsylvania and the middle colonies. The Great Wagon Road from Philadelphia to Georgia also brought Quakers, Lutheran Germans and Moravians into NC. Princeton University was also steeped in the Scots-Irish enlightenment. A number of these Princeton men, including William R. Davie, Samuel McCorkle, David Caldwell, and Joseph Caldwell, founded UNC-Chapel Hill in 1795. It was the first state university to construct facilities and graduate students.

Get into the old-time Christmas spirit with the annual Christmas open house at the historic 1820s Bryant House and 1760s McLendon Cabin. The Moore County Historical Association and Friends of the Bryant House will host the event so every Yule visitor can get a little taste of how early settlers celebrated Christmas.
Old Scotch Graveyard Clean Up Day

Program Information
Volunteers are needed to help clean up at the cemetery. There will be dead leaves and branches to remove. There will be mulch to spread on the pathways. Daylight Saving Time ends at 2:00 am on Sunday November 3rd, so volunteers will be able to rest and extra hour! Halloween will be over, so you can bring all your unused candy to share with other volunteers. Please bring rakes, gloves, garden carts, and loppers if you have them. Rain date is Saturday, November 9th.

Tour three house-museums built during the 1700s and 1800s. The event is free to the public to let people see how early Southern Pines and Moore County residents lived. The Gift Shop will be open for those unique gifts of scented, custom-designed soaps, note cards, commemorative postal envelopes, and books on Moore County history.
